1991年 Bauhouse 設立以来、装飾調度品、美術工芸は産業デザインへとシフトしていきます。第二次世界戦争後の戦勝国では経済復興が進み、建築・家具、住まいの民生用品の製造産業が急速に発展し、多くの優れたデザイン製品が開発されました。新作デザインレビューや雑誌記事・広告は、民生消費財の需要を起こし、産業振興に結びついてデザイン関係の図書も多く出版されるようになります。デザイン分野の仕事を目指す学生に企業は好意的で、メーカーの発表展示には招待され、製品カタログやセールマテリアルが実践的な教材となりました。
「Decorative Art」出版のはじまり
初版は、建築と室内装飾、家具・テーブルウエアー・アートワークの構成。1921年初版、1971年 Vol.66まで刊行 され、住まいの造形装飾に関する専問書では最長・最大ボリュームのセンチュリーブックとなりました。
建築・室内装飾、家具・アートクラフツが混然一体の時代の富裕上層社会の住まいの設計、造形美術作品の制作から、一般市民が手にすることができるようになった現代の量産工業製品プロダクトデザインまで、実作記録とその評価を展観することができます。陶芸・家具・室内・照明には「和のデザイン」の存在感があり、世界のデザイン界に大きな影響を与えています。各地で見本市やメーカーの新作発表会が頻繁に開催され、展示デザイン専問雑誌が盛んに出版される時代になると、一年毎のメジャーな編集内容では業界の先端ニーズにそぐわなくなり、デザインセレクション、レビュー紹介誌は支持を失い廃刊に至ります。

全ページを開くと気がつく掲載除外品目
壁面要素としてwallpaper、textils がありますが、 絵・彫刻は vol.42 、wall hangsは vol.49のみで、映り込む額装はわずかでした。室内に飾られる絵画・版画は､プロダクトデザインと別物、純粋アートゆえに外したのか、美術品の所有者が判明すると厄介な問題がおこるからでしょう。
